The name I am using is a play of words with my first name, Jet, combined with word etcetera meaning ‘all the rest’. Basically it means Jet and all the rest. My Creative Writing teacher liked it. I like it, too.

About my turtles. My first turtle wasn’t exactly mine. He was a little bigger than a compact disk. I named him “Pagong” because he’s a pagong, turtle in Filipino. My siblings also gave him different names like “Pong”, “Bilis” and “Ba-o”. I guess the turtle really didn’t care anyway. He doesn’t eat bread but he eats cake.

Unfortunately, he was stolen by some kids in my grandmother’s house. He was there because he was a prop for my grandparents’ Golden Anniversary. We didn’t realize he was gone until my three-year-old brother, Mico kept on bugging me: “’san gong? ’san gong?” (”Where’s Pagong?”)

Here’s Mico with his favorite red umbrella:

And that was how Pagong left us. I hope he’s in a better place.

I sometimes imagined inscribing a poem on his back but I never really had the chance to do it. Oh, well. I have other turtle stories as I also have other turtle. But I guess this is all for now, I kind of feel bad just now reminiscing about Pagong.

Now you know why my blog is entitled “Inscriptions Behind A Turtle’s Back”.
