how to cook rice

March 23, 2008

Being in an Asian country, I’ve been trained how to cook rice when I was still young. Rice is like the major crop in the Philippines and the rest of the Asian countries. I really don’t know what to feel whenever I encounter a grown man scratching his head in front of a cauldron or a rice cooker explaining his dilemma of not knowing how to cook rice. You need a cauldron or a rice cooker.

Step 1.
Put the rice in the cooker. It doesn’t really matter how you put it. People usually use cups. Go ahead and use cups. I don’t use cups. I pour the whole kilo down.

Step 2.
Wash the rice with water. If you already think it’s clean, I don’t care. Clean it again. You’ll never know how many impurities it may have. Let the impurities flow as you drain the water.

Step 3.
Pour water. The amount of water is debatable. Some people use the same amount of cups as the rice. Some say add an extra cup. As for me, I use my fingers. I use it as a measuring stick. I stop pouring until the water reaches half of my middle finger which stands from the surface of the rice.

Step 4.
Set the cooker. Do not forget the lid!

Step 5 (for cauldrons).
Set it on strong fire. When it boils, open the lid a little to let air out. Then wait for it to cook.

Caution:
Do not leave your rice cooking unattended. For rice cookers, the cookers accumulate a lot of watts. For those who cook in fire, rice burns easily.

It’s funny, ladies here in the Philippines spend a lot to buy whitening lotions while ladies in the US spend a lot on tanning lotions. Beauty products has always been there since the olden times. There has been evidence that cosmetics has been existing since 4000 BC on Egypt. Greeks and Romans has been using them since the ancient times. Fragrances like frankinscence and myrrh are even mentioned in the Bible!

In India, people used henna for dying their hair. Chinese used beeswax, gelatin, gum and even egg to stain their fingernails! Japanese geishas used crushed petals of safflowers as lipsticks and make-up!

Cosmetics has been around for many centuries now. Beauty has been a very prominent topic for poets like Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, William Wordsworth and probably every other poets in the canon.

I guess what cosmetics aim is to preserve the youthful beauty one has. Age will always be there. What these beauty products do is to delay the signs of aging in one’s appearance. And you know what? There’s nothing wrong about it.

tour travel trip

I love travelling. I don’t actually have so much opportunity to do it but I’ve done it a couple of times in some places here in the Philippines. I’ve been in Cebu, Baguio, Tagaytay, Iligan and Cagayan de Oro. Perhaps it’s the excitement of seeing new places far from home that hooks me up to like travelling. Or maybe the hotels!

I love hotels. I love staying in a place where everyone is so friendly. Especially if you’ve got hotel discounts or special offers, easier to the budget.

I love room service. I love the idea that you leave your room messy and leave then come back to see that some unknown person went in and clean your room for you. Don’t you just love it?

I love being in a moving comfortable vehicle for hours. I love the road. The idea that you’re not settled in one place. There’s a nomad inside of us that craves for new sights, new places and new experiences.

I love the people! I enjoy meeting new faces. People living in a different culture always interests me. I also enjoy being with the people with me travelling. You wouldn’t expect me to travel alone! To have someone you know dearly and experiencing new areas together.

I love the food! Who doesn’t? New food always inspires me to try native delicacies that would either water your mouth or make you puke. Either way, I love it! It gives me a sense of welcome to their place, to partake of their food.

I love the souvenirs! Ranging from keychains to huge tents, I love them! The very reason why my bag going home is always heavy and my pocket almost empty. Souvenirs to give to friends and relatives.

Lastly I love the stories. I love the stories you give to those you love. I love seeing the looks in their eyes. I love bringing them to the places they’ve never been through my stories.

If you love to travel as badly as I do, I suggest you look into this helpful site about hotel reservations and travel. They seem to provide everything for you! All you have to do is to relax yourself and enjoy.
